15th Annual Clarence J. Abbott Lectures February 21 and 23 2017

The Pentecostal Theological Seminary is happy to announce the fifteenth annual Clarence J. Abbott Lectures in Biblical Studies to be given on 21 and 23 February 2017 in Cross Memorial Chapel at the Seminary.  The lectures on the theme ‘The Spirit and Hermeneutics’ will be offered by Craig S. Keener and John Christopher Thomas, and they are open to the public. The first lecture, entitled ‘Toward a Pentecostal Theology of Anointed Cloths’ will be given by Prof. Thomas on 21 February at 11.00 am. The second lecture, entitled ‘Spirit Hermeneutics’ will be offered by Prof. Keener on 23 February at 11.00 am.

Craig Keener is F.M. and Ida Thompson Professor of Biblical Studies at Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, KY. Before coming to Asbury in July 2011, Dr. Keener taught at Palmer Theological Seminary of Eastern University for 15 years and before that he taught at Hood Theological Seminary.

Craig has authored 21 books, five of which have won book awards in Christianity Today. His IVP Bible Background Commentary: New Testament, now in its 2nd revised edition, has sold more than half a million copies (including editions in several languages). His recent books include Spirit Hermeneutics; The Mind of the Spirit: Paul’s Approach to Transformed ThinkingActs: An Exegetical Commentary (4 vols., 4559 pages); Miracles: The Credibility of the New Testament AccountsThe Historical Jesus of the GospelsThe Gospel of Matthew: A Socio-Rhetorical CommentaryRomans1-2 CorinthiansThe Gospel of John: A Commentary.

Craig is married to Médine Moussounga Keener, who holds a PhD from University of Paris 7. She was a refugee for 18 months in her nation of Congo (their story together appears in the book Impossible Love), and together Craig and Médine work for ethnic reconciliation in the U.S. and Africa. Craig was ordained in an African-American denomination in 1991 and was one of the associate ministers in an African-American megachurch in Philadelphia. He has taught in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, and in connection with various denominations.

John Christopher Thomas is Clarence J. Abbott Professor of Biblical Studies at the Pentecostal Theological Seminary in Cleveland, TN. A member of the full-time faculty of the Pentecostal Theological Seminary since 1982, Professor Thomas has been honored for his work in New Testament scholarship by his election into membership of the Studiorum Novi Testamenti Societas and his appointment as the Clarence J. Abbott Professor of Biblical Studies at the Seminary. 

He has published articles in several leading international journals devoted to study of the New Testament including: New Testament Studies, Novum Testamentum, Zeitschrift für die neutestamentliche Wissenschaft, and Journal for the Study of the New Testament.  He has authored seven books including: Footwashing in John 13 and the Johannine Community; Ministry and Theology: Studies for the Church and Its Leaders; The Devil, Disease, and Deliverance: Origins of Illness in New Testament Thought; He Loved Them until the End: the Farewell Materials in the Gospel according to John; The Pentecostal Commentary on 1 John, 2 John, 3 John; The Spirit of the New Testament; The Apocalypse: A Literary and Theological Commentary; A Pentecostal Reads the Book of Mormon; and (with Frank D. Macchia), Revelation. Professor Thomas serves as Editor of the Journal of Pentecostal Theology and Supplement Series, and serves as General Editor of the Pentecostal Commentary Series. 

Strongly committed to parish ministry, he has served as Associate Pastor of the Woodward Church of God in Athens, Tennessee since 1981. Professor Thomas has been a Guest Lecturer or Visiting Lecturer at a variety of educational institutions on five continents. He was named Alumnus of the Year in 1992 by Ashland Theological Seminary and in 2004 by the Church of God Theological Seminary. Dr Thomas served as the President of the Society for Pentecostal Studies (1997-98). Bangor University (Wales) named him Director of the Centre for Pentecostal and Charismatic Studies

He is married to Barbara and they have two daughters, Paige Thomas Scaperoth and Lori Thomas Brown, and two sons-in-law, David A. Scaperoth and Chad J. Brown, and one grand-daughter, Madeline Danielle Thomas.
